Hey Ya’ll!! I don’t know about you, but we have been extremely busy lately since school let out for the summer. You would think it would be the opposite but apparently the universe decided otherwise for us! Now that we are past dance recitals, birthdays, anniversaries, and everything else that has been on our plate lately, I am so happy to be back to normalcy (If there really ever is a normal in the world we live today)! Can I get an AMEN!

I took on a project lately that I wanted to share with you guys! I scooped up these end tables earlier this year and finally got around to refinishing them so I could get them out of the garage! I got a heck of a deal, but I just couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with them. It was if I had painter’s block??! Is that even a thing? Well, for me it was. Here is what they looked like before:

I got an idea that I wanted to stain the tops of these and paint the bottom with Dixie Belle Dried Sage which is a wonderful neutral with a little bit of green undertones. In my head it was going to be beautiful. So, I started sanding the tops down only to find that the veneer on these were just too thin and I wouldn’t be able to stain them! Shoot! They had such a pretty inlay. There went that idea out the door!

So, I thought well I’ll just paint the tops in Dixie Belle coffee bean and leave the dried sage on the bottom. But, for some reason, I just wasn’t feeling it! Many times, with furniture painters, we tend to change our minds A LOT! And most times we don’t know what we want to do until we just start doing it. Then magically, it just all comes together during the process!

I decided that I would rather use Dixie Belle’s Driftwood for the bottoms which has more of a grey undertone. I love Driftwood and it is so versatile and can go with any décor.

I still wanted to do the Dixie Belle Coffee Bean tops, but these tables were calling for something more! The driftwood painted bottoms reminded me of a coastal color and I got the bright idea I would create a faux driftwood finish for the tops of the tables.

I started out with 2 coats of coffee bean on the tops (see pic above). Then I used Dixie Belle Driftwood, Dropcloth, Gravel Road and Chocolate on the tops. Let me tell you, it was A LOT of blending over and over again. I wanted to make sure the tables would obviously match. I blended and blended until my little heart’s content. I used rows of different colors and used my water mister bottle to keep meshing the colors together until I had blended lines.

I wanted to be able to see the different colors changing ever so slightly on the tops of the tables without the colors coming together as one which would create a muddy look and I didn’t want that. The good thing about Dixie Belle paint is that you can let it dry and if it’s not what you like you can come back with a different color and blend some more until you get the finish that you are happy with . That is exactly what I did with these tables.

I did some minor distressing to the bottoms. I then sealed the tops with 3 coats of Dixie Belle Gator Hide for a protective finish so that they would repel water and keep the tops of the tables durable. I sealed the bottoms with 2 coats of Dixie Belle Flat Topcoat.

I just adore these tables and the way they turned out! They give a great coastal vibe. Here are some shots of the finished tables below!

See you soon for the next project! We have lots to do! For a list of products I use, see below.
