It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that nearly everything farmhouse is popular. You do not need to sacrifice your wallet to get the farmhouse style. With a little bit of Dixie Belle chalk mineral paint, the possibilities are endless.
If you are like me, you like to thrift! I love to go to my local Goodwill or Restore to see what I can find. Most of the time, it’s going to need an uplift anyway. If it’s functional and in good condition, who cares what it looks like, right? It can all be changed with a little bit of paint!
One of my clients asked me to re-do a decorative plate for her. Here is the before picture:
I started out by giving this plate a good cleaning with a degreaser. You should always start with a clean piece to get rid of any dirt and grime. We want to make sure our paint adheres properly. For this piece, I just used Krud Kutter, you can get it in the link below.
Then, I used Dixie Belle in the color Cotton to give it 2 coats of paint. I went ahead with an extra step and painted another coat of Dixie Belle Cotton so it would have 3 coats. Cotton is Dixie Belle’s brightest white. I wanted a good white base since this plate was previously very dark.
I like to wait 24 hours for the paint to dry fully. Then, I dry brushed the plate with Dixie Belle Chocolate to highlight the detail in the plate. When dry brushing, you only want a very small amount of paint on your brush and you will want a lint free rag to wipe your brush off with. Dry brushing is literally almost having your brush dry, hence “dry brushing”! You can get the Dixie Belle Chocolate, lint free cloths and brushes in the link below.
Once dry brushed, I sealed with Dixie Belle Flat Top Coat. I gave the plate 2 thin coats of Flat Top coat to seal it.
That’s it! This project can be completed in 1 day with very minimal effort and not to mention low cost! You can get this style with just about any piece of décor. Dixie Belle is so versatile, and their products allow for the paint to adhere to just about any surface.
So, when you take your next trip to the thrift store, keep in mind you can transform anything to your liking but most of all just have fun with it!! Happy Painting!
